Waxing: believe it or not people are still bruising folks and using the wrong wax for body parts. Let me tell you what to look for when you go to a salon or spa to receive wax treatments. First of all waxing is uncomfortable not painful. The following body parts require what wax:

Eyes- strip wax as well as hard wax(pellon is better for the skin not fabric)

Lip- hard wax

Face – hard wax

Ear, nose, chin- hard wax

Underarm, bikini, stomach – hard wax

Legs- strip (pellon is better for the skin)

My experience at the Orlando Trade Show

Traveling to Orlando was great leaving BWI ever thing was smooth. At the show I was able to reconnect with some of the hottest nails companies and I was able to educate some of my peers on building their Nail business as well as the Basic in makeup artistry.

The most important booth for me at the show was my booth Bluffajo Cosmetics. Last year we partner with Brazilian Keratin Manicure product, but this year we jump out there and did it by our selves . We featured our hottest lip glosses, effects, lipstick and bronzer in our line . I must say the hottest product for us at the show was the effects Liquid Gold, Vilu lip gloss, Coco bronzer, and Thrill seeker pigment. Day One was set up for the show we did not have electricity when we got there, our table was not drip properly after 30 minutes of tracking some one down it was taken care.

Day Two the day of the show to 5,000 Beauty Professionals came to the most wonder trade show. The Floor open and they all rushed into the show . As I walk around the show I found some of my favorite manufactures like footlogix the leaders in medical pedicures. As I pushed my way through the crowd I ran into my lovely friends at the CND Booth. I said ‘wow’ are you all giving products away free. It was jam packed no room on the carpet every nail professional wanted to take a bite out of shellac. Demos were being done, people were shopping, asking questions it was truly amazing to see of the attendance of nail professionals. Seriously, a decade ago you saw mostly hair professionals, now it is exciting to see all the nails professionals at the show as well as the LOAD of different products. This was a prime example of BRAND loyalty. Speaking of soak of gels and gels polishes there were over a dozen of them at the show and all of the booth had nail professionals investing in products to take home to introduce to their clients.

Day Three: I continue my such to find some of my other friends. I stroll down to Minx Nails and they two have taken their product to the next level in many ways. One- they are doing custom minx allowing nail professionals to give them a design and they create that for you, as well as minx layering, putting one minx on top of the other and creating a special effect on the minx-wow that is awesome.
Next stop Entity Beauty they too was featuring their magnificent couture gel polish, I decided to get one nail
done and when I say it is shinny like glass, it is like glass.. I will see how long it last, stay tune!

I continue my travels to Lumos bottom and top coat only product by Jim and Lyndia Nordstrom the famous Nordstrom Family for the beauty industry. What a awesome product.

1. If you want to down your lip color you can color your lips with a dark lip liner
2. Ans: No, if you want to down play your lip color you can use concealer on the entire lip to tune down the lip.
3. If you want to make your eyebrows darker fill them in with a eyebrow pencil
4. Ans: Yes that is an option you and also use a brow shadow- dark brown is always a go when in doubt
5. Using a concealer under you eye shadow helps it stay on longer

Artificial Nails: What you need to know

People often say acrylic damage their nails. Well, you must know that acrylic is only a monomer mixed with a polymer—a basic chemical process. (I know, too much heavy science for you right? Lol) BUT did you know that that chemical process is not what damages your nails? The technician damages the nails. Acrylic done properly can be worn for years without any problems unless you are on severe medication whereas lifting of product or separating of nails. The holes and severe ridges customers are experiencing is NOT from the acrylic it is from the techniques of the nail technician.

At Maisie Dunbar Spa Lounge we believe in maintaining the integrity of the natural nails. First the tech should be using acrylic that is suited for and specified for nails and not teeth. Repeat exposure to MMA found in the latter can cause allergic reaction. Consumers say ‘I can’t wear acrylic they make my nails weak, they make my cuticle itch, they make my nail bed feel tight. ‘ Sorry to say, again check the technician. Remember anything over the natural nail will soften the nails due to moisture, however does not damage the nails.

The proper application for acrylic begins by having the client sanitizes their hands. Next a dry manicure should be performed implements not an electric file. Nail bed should be further cleaned and proceed with product application. I am not against the electric file if used properly, a technician can do just as must damage to the nail bed with a hand file as with an electric file. Another important note of precaution: It is imperative that you DO NOT CUT CUTICLE. Instead, have it pushed back with the removal of non-living tissue. The cuticle is live tissue, therefore should NEVER be cut. To Wax or Not--The Dilemma for African American Women/Men

Waxing is a great alternative for hair removal.

There are several options today for hair removal Some choices are good for the skin but yet very expensive and in today’s’ economy everyone is trying to save money. I would like to share with you tips for a long lasting wax and minimum pain experience.

1. Make sure you have at least 1 inch of hair growth

2. Exfoliate the skin (area) you plan on waxing

3. For extra long hairs trim it down

4. Spray antiseptic before waxing(always use a clean stick to apply the wax)

5. For sensitive area ALWAYS use a hard wax to avoid bruising

6. Protect skin with moisturizing lotion (use ice rocks to help calm the skin)

7. To avoid ingrown hairs, wax regularly (ever 2-3 weeks when you first start)

8. Exfoliate regularly to avoid ingrown hairs

For coarse hair you may have to wax the same area more than once, but be careful not to bruise. Using a high quality wax and working in a sanitize environment is always a plus.

Make sure the skin is pulled nice and tight to avoid any bruising. Do not be afraid to ask your guest to help . Keep in mind waxing does exfoliate the skin so protect the skin after waxing. For underarm wax clients should be advised to not use deodorant for 7 hours after waxing.

Professional Shellac Manicure

One of my guest came in Friday and told me when she was cheating on me... going to another salon when her shellac french was done it looked wrinkled and the technican told her that is how it looks. Well, that is not the way it should look if it is done correctly. Yes, you can get a shellac french but the nail professional must know how to apply the product correctly to avoid any shrinkage in the product. Shellac is like any think else technique is what matters most. You must know how to use the product, you must know how to polish precisely, and lastly you must know how to trouble shoot if/when necessary.

Nail Care Professionals should have the guest wash their hands before receiving nail treatment
Nail Care Professionals should wash their hands after every guest.
Nail Care Professionals should sanitize their own hands, as well as the guest hands before beginning any nail treatment.
Nail Care Professionals should always use a clean towel or paper towel at all times i.e for each guest.
Nail Care Professionals should always follow manufacturer’s directions. All products at nail stations should be manufacture labeled. If not, consumers reserve the right to ask the nail professional what product they are using.
No used foot file should be use on a guest.
No credo blade should be used at anytime on the guest feet. It is against the law in MOST states.
When artificial nail are applied, Nail Care Professionals should always use a nylon brush because they can be disinfected; the others cannot.
Nail Care Professionals should not use a fluffy sponge because fluffy sponges cannot be disinfected. They can distribute nail dust, oil, and bacteria from one guest to the next.
Nail Care Professionals should always have two sets of implements so they can be sanitized in between guests for a minimum of 10 minutes in liquid sanitizer. All sanitizers should be EPA registered. Some states require nail implements to be sterilized by using an autoclave.
Implements should be clean and rust free.
Nail Care Professionals‘implements should be completely submerge for 10 minutes in an EPA disinfectant solution.
Proper ventilation is required by the law (OSHA)(EPA)
Nail Care Professionals should recommend guest with questionable nail conditions to seek medical advice before receiving treatments.
Nail Care Professionals should inform guest on proper nail and foot care between visits. You go to the Dentist once a year, but you brush daily for maintenance; same applies for hand and foot care homecare maintenance is required.
All salons and spas are required by law to have Material Safety Data Sheet(MSDS) for every product used or sold in the salon, spa or wellness center.
